I can be abstinent and still be sexually healthy. If that’s the place and time in my life and I’m making the choices, I’m not shaming myself. I’m keeping these boundaries because I’m pursuing a goal that’s incompatible with sexual permissiveness.
Dr. Dean Busby
For single members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and other religions, there can be some confusion about how to save sex for marriage and live your religious beliefs while also experiencing the sexual feelings that God gave you.
Dr. Dean Busby, a professor at Brigham Young University, shares thoughts on balancing these important values. You can hold boundaries without punishing yourself for being a sexual being. You can have a healthy sexual vision, accept that part of yourself, and still abstain.
Seeing sexuality as a sacred part of yourself honors both your spirituality and your sexuality.
Dean M. Busby, Ph.D., is a professor in the School of Family Life at Brigham Young University. He teaches the healthy sexuality in marriage course at BYU to hundreds of students. He has also taught at Texas Tech University and Syracuse University. He published more than 100 articles and book chapters and five books. His recent research has centered on sexual passion in marriage and development of healthy sexuality in families. He’s been married to his wife Colleen for 36 years and they enjoy their family of three sons and eight grandchildren.
